A new 3,000 square foot single story home in The Highlands of San Mateo was completed in March of 2017. The owners wanted a modern contemporary home that would capture the great views of San Francisco Bay at rear yard. They also wanted an outdoor courtyard that would protect them from occasional high winds the area experienced.

The house was designed around this courtyard and aimed towards the views – the owner also wanted to experience the views while at the kitchen sink. The relationship of kitchen, dining, and living rooms was set up to accommodate for large family-and-friends gatherings and organized in a way that would allow kitchen to be part of the social activities in the living room during holidays and sporting events.

Their twin boys required two identical bedrooms sharing a Jack ‘n Jill bathroom. Other functional needs were to have as much glass as possible, with heating by a radiant hydronic underfloor system and cooling with air conditioning utilizing concealed ductwork. The house was designed with flat roofs and minimal overhangs that become deeper depending upon the sun orientation. The home is intended to be a simple, elegant structure suited to the owner’s lifestyle while fitting into the Highlands neighborhood.
